Shunichiro Kamiya / Workshop Description
Shunichiro Kamiya had experienced being part of several professional taiko ensembles in his career. Because of this variety of experiences, he now expertises in teaching the tricks to make you feel more confident and comfortable in your playing style, all whilst building your stamina and endurance to play stronger and longer. Shunichiro is knowledgeable in the history and advancement of the current taiko style of playing, and will help you understand the “why”s of taiko!
WS #1: Intricate Small Drum Technique
Date: 4/21 (Tue)
Time: 8:00-10:00pm (2hrs)
Topic: Small Drums (Shime & Okedo), High-speed precision and Mitsu-uchi mastery
Elevate your small drum technique by focusing on the nuances of speed and accuracy. Shunichiro Kamiya guides experienced players through the physical and mental discipline required for high-performance small drum playing. You will dive deep into the "horsebeat" patterns that define modern taiko, learning the secrets to playing fast, staying relaxed, and ensuring every strike is perfectly articulated.
WS #2:
Achieving Fluidity and Depth on Odaiko
Date: 4/23 (Thu)
Time: 7:00-9:00pm (2hrs)
Topic: Odaiko, Playing from the "Hara" (core) and removing muscle tension.
Many Odaiko players struggle with stiffness and "muscle-heavy" playing. In this workshop, Shunichiro Kamiya teaches you how to shift your focus from your head to your hara (core). By learning to generate power from the center of the body rather than the arms and shoulders, you will achieve a deeper tone and greater endurance. This session is for experienced players ready to move past the "visual" of Odaiko and master the true internal connection required for a powerful, effortless sound.
