WS #2 / Solos, Improvisation & Musical Dialogue

  • Date/Time: Tuesday, September 29, 2026 | 6:00 – 9:00 PM

  • Description: Using the framework of Honjitsu, Nikyokan's Gastón and Keiji lead an intensive deep dive into the art of soloing and collective musicality. Learn how to craft a solo, support fellow players while they are featured, and improvise with confidence inside a live ensemble setting.
Honjitsu isn't just about learning and playing a piece; it’s about learning to make musical decisions in the moment, connecting with the ensemble, and discovering new possibilities.

Note for Tuesday-Only Participants: Tuesday’s session will move directly into improvisation tools using Honjitsu's structural framework. Core song patterns will be introduced via quick watch-and-learn instruction so the focus remains strictly on musicality and soloing.

Biography

Nikyokan Wadaiko is the Japanese drum group from the Nikyokan cultural center.
Its members have training in various traditional arts that come together on stage to generate an innovative proposal around the art of wadaiko.
The group’s repertoire is made up of their own compositions and traditional pieces of Japanese folklore.
At the same time, the group uses a varied use of styles and traditional instruments of Japan in addition to taiko, such as the shinobue (bamboo flute), the kotsutzumi (small drum), chappa (metal cymbals) and dance among other elements.
