[Nikyokan WS] 9/28 (Mon) 6-9pm Honjitsu: Ensemble & Arrangement
WS #1 / Honjitsu: Ensemble & Arrangement
-
Date/Time: Monday, September 28, 2026, 6:00 – 9:00 PM
-
Description: Learn Nikyokan's signature composition, Honjitsu, from the composer, Gastón San Cristóbal! Unlike single-part ensemble songs where everyone plays a common ji-uchi or main phrase, Honjitsu layers distinct voices across every section of the taiko setup.
In this session, you will learn the song’s core arrangements, phrase transitions, and how your chosen instrument locks into the full ensemble. Additionally, you will be introduced to improvisation approaches, diving into how to create a solo structure through fun exercises.

Biography
Nikyokan Wadaiko is the Japanese drum group from the Nikyokan cultural center.
Its members have training in various traditional arts that come together on stage to generate an innovative proposal around the art of wadaiko.
The group’s repertoire is made up of their own compositions and traditional pieces of Japanese folklore.
At the same time, the group uses a varied use of styles and traditional instruments of Japan in addition to taiko, such as the shinobue (bamboo flute), the kotsutzumi (small drum), chappa (metal cymbals) and dance among other elements.
