Yeeman “ManMan” Mui

Yeeman “ManMan” Mui (they/them) is a multidisciplinary taiko artist and music educator, dedicated to artistic expression to foster an inclusive, equitable, and creative community through multisensory expression and a mindful connection with one’s body.

ManMan’s professional taiko career began as a Taiko Center of the Pacific Fellow in 2012 where they trained with pioneers of the contemporary taiko arts Kenny Endo and Chizuko Endo in Honolulu, Hawai’i. ManMan debuted as a taiko soundscape artist for OTHELLO at Hawai’i Theater in 2016. Currently working as a Teaching Artist in Grand Vision’s Meet the Music Program, ManMan also teaches regular taiko lessons at the Grand Annex, Los Angeles Taiko Institute, and Makoto Taiko. They have facilitated workshops globally sharing their innovative pedagogical approach inspired by the Orff-Schulwerk.

ManMan composed original taiko music, and directed the music production for award-winning documentary “Blurring the Color Line: Chinese in the Segregated South in 2021.” With taiko artist Carrie Alita Carter, ManMan co-created an interactive taiko show titled “Listening into Silence” that connects with students on topics of neurodiversity, language, race, gender, and communication. ManMan is one of the co-founders of the Rhythmic Flow Taiko, a Parkinson’s-friendly taiko curriculum. They led the production of a website resource archive funded by the Taiko Community Alliance Grant 2021. ManMan is one of the founding members of Mujō Dream Flight, an artistic vehicle with predominantly trans/non-binary taiko artists, creating both original works and traditional adaptations.
