Honjitsu Workshops by Nikyokan Wadaiko
Unlocking Voice in Taiko: Nikyokan Wadaiko Brings Honjitsu to LATI!
What makes a taiko ensemble unforgettable—unison, or the distinct "colors" of each player?
This September, Asano Taiko U.S. welcomes Nikyokan Wadaiko (Argentina) for a special 2-day workshop series on their signature piece, Honjitsu.
Composed in Japan and inspired by a conversation with former Kodo member, Honjitsu ("Today") moves away from rigid unison to champion real-time dialogue, expressive soloing, and individual voice.
The Workshops
Unlike typical pieces, Honjitsu layers unique phrases across 7 instrument stations to build deep ensemble listening and solo confidence:
-
WS #1: Ensemble & Arrangement (Mon 9/28 | 6–9 PM) — Master core arrangements, station transitions, and foundational solo structures.

WS #2: Solos & Musical Dialogue (Tue 9/29 | 6–9 PM) — Break free from memorized patterns! Learn to craft solos on the fly and converse with the ensemble in real-time.
